Briefly highlight your key campaign issues and positions.
I believe the responsibility of government is to invest in our future and foster a society that ensures equality and justice for all. To that end I will focus on achieving criminal and social justice reform by abolishing the private prison industry in Florida, raising the minimum wage, expanding access to healthcare and advocating for laws that promote equality. I support protecting our environment through the expansion of solar and wind energy and ending fracking and off shore oil drilling in Florida and advocating for quality public education by increasing per student funding and teacher salaries.
I believe in healthcare as a human right and support a single payer/universal healthcare system. Florida's refusal to expand Medicaid has led to Florida being one of the leaders in the country when it comes to uninsured rates. We have also suffered from growing suicide rates, especially among women due to the lack of mental health treatment available. Medicaid could also be used to provide Paid Family leave in Florida which I support and believe would provide a boost to our economy.
Do you support the current state ban on local gun control measures?
Explain your position on local gun control measures.
As an attorney, I have spent a substantial amount of time studying the Constitution and it's history, including the 2nd Amendment. While I do support the right of self-defense and every other amendment in the Constitution I know the meaning of the 2nd Amendment has been twisted by special interests. The ability to regulate the use of guns at a local community level is exactly what was intended by the 2nd Amendment, and the preemption put in place by the legislature is unconstitutional in my eyes
Explain your position on sea-level rise threatening Florida.
This shouldn't need explaining, we can see the increase of flooding every storm season and the tremendous amount of money being invested to restore our beaches. Florida is ground zero in the battle against sea-level rise and climate change.
Should gun rights and gun control laws ban assault weapons?
Prohibit certain models of guns, as was done with the 1994 federal assault weapons ban and Gov. Mitt Romney's legislation in Massachusetts.
