She had spent three months in rehab for an alcohol addiction and was doing well.
Then, the drugs -- and heroin -- took her.
At first, she was able to get methadone, the drug that stanches opioid cravings. But the drug became harder and harder to find, her mother said. And because she didn't have insurance, she couldn't afford treatment. Beds for the indigent were in short supply.
When Nancy lost her job working as a security guard, it was the last straw.
"I think she was just depressed," her mother said.
When she left Nancy that morning, she was fine. When she came home, Nancy was in the bathroom, suffering from an overdose. Her autopsy revealed fentanyl in her system.
She was 57.
