"Stephen was a good man with a kind heart. He would often volunteer his time doing anything you might need an extra set of hands to accomplish,'' his obituary said.

Stephen was helping with the landscaping at a North Palm Beach drug rehabilitation center. He also was learning to be an electrician. His goal, the obituary said, "was to work in the rehab he was helping to build.''

He bought heroin outside a Walmart with two other men and died alone, found on a street south of Linton Boulevard near the Intracoastal Waterway in Delray Beach, police reported.

He was 26.
